The encounter of judeo-spanish monodies with bulgarian polyphonies
Drawing from their experience in Bulgarian singing, The Balkanes Quartet, accompanied by David Bruley (percussion) and Edmond Ghrenassia (clarinet), create a polyphonic repertoire based on traditional Judeo-Spanish songs, on which they integrated traditional Bulgarian songs showing similar modes and thematic topics. Thus, for example, a Sephardic song that depicts a dialogue between a mother and her daughter (Hija mia), the mother beseeching her daughter unlucky in love not to throw herself into the sea, responds to a Bulgarian song in which a young women begs her mother not to marry her too soon (Molih ta)... This interaction between the two musical cultures ‒ Sephardic and Bulgarian ‒ gives a renewed vision of the Judeo-Spanish singing.
