Recorded during a concert held on 14 octobre 2002
to commemorate the 120th anniversary of the Synagogue de Bordeaux
The end of the 19th century was the golden age of the music in use in Portuguese synagogues in Bordeaux, Bayonne and Paris. The cantor would recite the liturgy accompanied by an organ and a male choir of some 20 adults and children. This recording is a reconstruction of an impressive French tradition which entirely vanished after WWII and the demographic upheavals of the 20th century.
